Interior ministry of Pakistan has finally reached to a decision and has given an ultimate deadline of 90 days to all the telecom companies for the biometric verification of SIMs, during a recent meeting. All the telecom operators will re-verify 103 million SIMs through Biometric Verification System (BVS) and the process will be taking place in two phases.
The first phase for the process of verification of SIMs would be starting from January 12 to February 26, 2015 as we have reported earlier, in which the subscribers having more than three SIMs registered against their CNIC would be required to re-verify them.
The second phase will be started from 27 February to 13 April, 2015 in which the subscribers with less than 3 SIMs will be included for the Biometric verification of their SIMs. Those SIMs which will not get registered after 14th April, 2015 would be discarded by the telecom companies.
For this whole process of Biometric verification of SIMs, the telecom operators will be soon starting media campaigns along with the calls and SMSs to inform the subscribers to seek their cooperation.
Previously, the plan proposed for the re-verification process had 5 phases that were supposed to be completed by the end of November, 2015 but now it seems that Interior Ministry has pushed the telecom operators to complete this whole process within 2 phases and 90 days.
Not to mention here that cellular operators have already deactivated around 14 million mobile SIMs by the end of December 2014 which were inactive for more than 90 days.
